What to Wear to a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

As April continues on, we're getting closer and closer to May, and more specifically, Cinco de Mayo. It may seem like a lifetime away, but the Mexican holiday is at the beginning of the month. Don't wait until May 4th to begin preparing your Cinco de Mayo costume. You'll want enough time to properly imitate the historic culture and style before its showtime. Here are a few tips to help you gat started:

1. Colorize. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday, so you can’t go wrong with traditional Mexican colors! Look to the country’s flag for inspiration. Opt for rich shades of red, green, and white. If you’re not too thrilled with those colors, you can always substitute with other bright colors.
2. Accessorize. As true to most fashion, accessories make the outfit. Luckily, it’s pretty simple to incorporate a few pieces of traditional Mexican clothing into your look. In fact, you probably have a few of these laying around the house! Some traditional Mexican pieces include sombreros, long, loose skirts, cowboy boots, leather sandals, wraps, embroidered shirts, and ponchos.
3. Simplify. If you don’t feel like going all out, feel free to take a more simple approach. For women, pair a colorful, full, ankle-length skirt with a white, off-the-shoulder blouse. Complete the look by tying up your hair with ribbons.Men can pair a classic white shirt with loose fitting pants, leather sandals, and a sombrero. Western-inspired styles like broken-in jeans, oversized belt buckles, and snap-button shirts can help complete the look.
4. Impersonate. Costume parties are always fun, so consider dressing like one of Mexico’s prominent historical figures. Women can dress like Frida Kahlo, which includes a red scarf and loose white shirt. As for makeup, opt for dark red lipstick. Use a black eye pencil to draw in Frida’s infamous unibrow.Men can dress like Pancho Villa, which includes a dark shirt and white pants. Complete the look with a large black mustache and an even larger sombrero.
